THE THIRD CENTRAL ASIAN CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE CHANGE HAS STARTED

On October 19, 2020, the Third Central Asian Conference on Climate Change (CACCC-2020) started via videoconferencing, which will last until October 23 inclusive.

The event is attended by representatives of Central Asian government agencies, international development agencies, financial institutions, academia and civil society.

The main topic of this conference is climate change, which is directly or indirectly related to human activities causing changes in the composition of the global atmosphere, in addition to natural climate fluctuations observed over comparable periods of time.

As is known, Turkmenistan is in favor of resolving environmental issues of regional and global scale. In this context, it is important to note the call of the state for international cooperation to overcome the negative consequences of the Aral Sea ecological disaster, including air pollution, which directly affects human health. Thus, within the framework of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, Turkmenistan made a proposal to organize, in cooperation with the World Health Organization and the UN Environmental Program, international research to study the correlation between the degree of air pollution and the incidence of infectious, oncological and cardiovascular diseases.

During the online forum, participants will consider in detail the issues in this vein. There will also be an exchange of views on four topical areas: the consequences of climate change and issues of shaping climate policy in a pandemic; scientific advances and approaches in research on climate change in a pandemic; information and knowledge on climate change: risks and opportunities; financing measures to combat climate change.

This year, the conference was organized within the framework of the project “Program on Adaptation and Mitigation of Climate Change in the Aral Sea Basin” (CAMP4ASB) and is a continuation of the World Bank's initiative to share knowledge and information on climate change in Central Asia, which was launched in 2013.

During the conference, special attention will also be paid to issues of the global and regional agenda, increasing national potential and the introduction of modern technologies in the field of climate change and other pressing issues of our time.

Following the results of the Third Central Asian Conference on Climate Change, a final document will be adopted, which will mark the progress and also lay the foundations for the formation of a common regional vision of the Central Asian countries in the field of climate change in the context of new realities.
