UN General Assembly adopts annual resolution on promoting a culture of peace, affirming support for Turkmenistan’s initiatives in building trust and dialogue in international relations
June 14, 2023 - the 79th plenary meeting of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly took place, during which the annual resolution entitled "Follow-up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace” presented by Bangladesh, was adopted.
Taking into account the activities undertaken by Turkmenistan to promote a culture of peace and inter-state dialogue, the resolution highlights the significance of the Outcome Document of the International Conference "Dialogue as a Guarantee of Peace" held in Ashgabat on December 11, 2022, which was previously published as an official document of the UN General Assembly.
Furthermore, the resolution emphasizes the need for further implementation of the UN General Assembly Resolution 77/32, adopted on December 6, 2022, at the initiative of Turkmenistan, declaring 2023 as the International Year of Dialogue as a Guarantee of Peace.
The adopted resolution also underscores the importance of the zones of peace and cooperation in Central Asia, the South Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean, established in accordance with the General Assembly resolutions, which provide a foundation for maintaining stability and security in key regions of the planet.
In general, the resolution emphasizes that all efforts undertaken by the United Nations system as a whole and the international community at large to promote conflict prevention, peaceful settlement of disputes, peacekeeping, disarmament, sustainable development, the promotion of human dignity and human rights, social integration, democracy, the rule of law, good governance, and gender equality at national and international levels contribute significantly to the formation of a culture of peace.
