The ceremony of commissioning of the gas pipeline "East-West" was held in Belek in the Balkan region. This pipeline merges largest fields of Turkmenistan into a single gas transportation system.

During the opening ceremony, the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov turned the valve of the gas pipeline "East-West", which streamed the first cubic meters of natural gas. In memory of the remarkable event, the head of the state left a note on the pipeline’s surface.

The new 733 km gas pipeline with 30 billion cubic meters of fuel capacity per year is laid from the gas compressor station "Shatlyk" in Mary region (south-east of the country) to the gas compressor station "Belek" in the Caspian region (western part of the country).

The importance of the gas pipeline "East-West" goes beyond the national boundaries. This project is designed to support international cooperation in the energy sector, given that the borders of supply of Turkmen hydrocarbon resources in the long term join the new regions and areas. The pipeline will enable to supply significant amounts of gas from the largest fields of the country to existing and prospective export markets.

Turkmenistan has huge reserves of hydrocarbon resources and is actively working to diversify supply routes to foreign markets. In recent years, the transnational gas pipeline to China was built. Also the second pipeline project to Iran was successfully implemented. Recently, the construction of the gas pipeline "Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India" started at the super-giant field "Galkynysh" in Mary region on December 13, 2016.
